How to Revamp Your Home by Using Fashion

As humans, we wake up and get ready to slay the day… in doing so, we try our best to look the part. We care about what people perceive when seeing us because it’s an instinct to judge. Although it might sound shallow, it has gotten us far in certain areas like dating, interviews, and meeting family and friends of your significant other. There’s also that fun part of expressing ourselves through the fashion we decide to strut in

From our ambitious noggins to our hard working little piggies we coordinate, match, plan, and adore our wardrobe in the most creative way. Our clothes scream “THIS IS ME AND I’M THE SHIT!”. But what about our homes? You know, the place where you do you the best way you do you (say that 9 times).

Before stepping into the interior design field and pursuing it as a passion and career, I suffocated with the normality of my bedroom and childhood home. I felt as though it didn’t represent me or my family. Growing up, my parents played safe with colors, layouts of a room, and furniture; meaning beige, brown, cream, off-white, and beige-ish colors. This was nonsense because my mom would dress the hell out of any hairstyle, stilettos, and designer handbag especially when hitting the town. Her technique of dressing up didn’t apply to household décor and our home didn’t represent how fun, silly, and cool we actually were.

Although huge changes weren’t made, I put my foot down and challenged my family by painting the walls a light lilac color, putting a white trim in the living and dining room, getting dark gray furniture, and purchasing a new chandelier and ceiling fan. Everyone was in awe of the little transformation that now represented all of us, which was fashion forward parents (for their age) and a house full of new 20 somethings and teenagers. It was modern, calm, and sleek for the first time ever.

I made an easy and cheap transition from our fashion styles and tastes to how our home should represent us, and you can to by checking off these goal-oriented questions:

  1. Fantasize: Before heading out or attending an event you fantasize about how you want to feel before picking anything out. You think about whether or not you care about comfort over style, style over comfort, or an even amount of both. Do the same when redecorating your space. Ask yourself “How do I want to feel in here, every day when coming home?” and picture it. This will lead you towards your ideal type of furniture and fabrics.

  2. Personalize: Yeah, those pants look amazing on you, but no one knows about the hidden pockets that you adore or that extra button the comes in handy, making it so much more special than a great ass. You have clothes that feel specially made for you and you love them for it. When buying items to furnish your home make sure you love it and it has a purpose and not because it simply matches. This will come in handy for things such as cool storage, jewelry boxes, and ottomans.

  3. Accessories: I don’t know about you, but I feel complete when I have the perfect earrings, necklace, and bracelets for my outfit. Make room for your favorite colors and patterns on throw pillows and art. Make sure it correlates with your theme of either comfort, masculinity, feministic, bright, bold, dark, neutral and so on.

  4. Center of Attention: The way we present ourselves to the world can either get us a neck-breaking amount of attention or a simple “You look nice”. What kind of attention do you desire when people come over to visit? Do you want your colleagues or siblings to be borderline envious or do you want simple conversation starters? This can determine paint colors, focal points, your epic display of things you’ve collected through traveling the world, and décor choices covered in gold or metallic silver. If it’s “bleh” and you don’t want “bleh” don’t buy “bleh”! If it says “BAM!” and it’s a little too much for you put……… it……….. down.

  5. Shoes: Sometimes what's on our feet tends to be ignored unless someone is sizing you up. But when they finally receive well deserved attention, it is surprisingly delightful. Just like shoes rugs can be disregarded and never obsessed over depending on who the owner is. Don't forget about the one thing that feels good under your feet after a long day.And just like shoes you want to match but in a subtle way.

  6. Outerwear: Oh outerwear, how you are oh-so necessary. Coats, sweaters, and jackets have become cooler and yet it shouldn't over power your clothes under neath. Your throw blanket for that awesome couch or imaginary California king... that is actually a queen, is that finishing touch you need for aesthetics and comfort.

  7. The Top of Your Head: Your perfect hairstyle or dope hat coincides with your whole look but isn't exclusive for one night. Your lighting is important and should be versatile for any future changes, but make sense for right now.

  8. Timing: Your out and about with your fantastic threads, but how long is this outfit going to last? Two hours, a full day, or maybe overnight? Ask yourself this when finalizing purchases and checkout carts. Make sure the prices are in sync with longevity and if you are planning for another change in the future.

It’s simple and personal just like your closet . After following these steps, your concept should reveal itself, so don’t doubt your style.
